The True Meaning of Christmas

Christmas is the annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus Christ is of supreme importance in the world history.

The influence of Jesus Christ is so immense that we cannot imagine a world without Him. Many of the countries would not have been as developed as today considering the number of schools and charity missions that various Christian missionaries have started. Many of the places would not have been as civilized as today considering the Barbarians who are now devout Christians. Science would not have been as developed as today without the Christian scientists (like Issac Newton, Blaise Pascal, Johannes Kepler, Galileo, Robert Boyle, Gregor Mendel, Micheal Faraday, Kelvin, Max Planck) who believed in an intelligent designer who designed and created the entire universe. The world would have been more morally depraved than this if there were no devout Christians who held high the moral laws and strong ethics which have been taught by Jesus Christ. So many ways has Jesus Christ influenced the history and is influencing even today. As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, it is of significance that we realize who Jesus is? And what Jesus accomplished for mankind?

Who is Jesus Christ?

The holy Bible says in Philippians 2:6-8

Philippians 2:6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!

Yes he is God himself. He is in the very nature of God. Bible also says everything has been created by him and for him.

Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

He is the creator of this entire universe. He is the owner of everything. Whatever has life today got life from Him. He was there before earth was created and He will be there eternally. That is the Godly dimension of Jesus Christ. But when Jesus Christ lived on earth he took the form of a human and lived on earth. It is hard to imagine the fullness of God in a human being. However, he voluntarily put aside some of His Godly attributes and lived on earth. He was a complete God and a complete man when he was living on earth. His birth on a virgin’s womb, His miracles, and His authority over the nature and finally His resurrection over death on the third day all reveals his Godly dimension.

What Jesus accomplished for mankind?

It is of utmost importance that we should understand what Jesus accomplished for mankind? Today many people including Christians do not understand Why Jesus had come? And what he had accomplished for mankind? If we don’t understand then the whole point is missed. Like many other religious leaders he did not come to teach certain principles for mankind and return to the soil. He had come to become a solution for man’s greatest problem – Sin. Bible teaches us that sin is the root of all problems and even the earth is cursed because of the sin. Sin means failing to live in the standard which God set for man. Since God is the owner and creator of the universe he has set certain standards to live in this world. Like a person who have invented an instrument knows how to operate his instrument better than everyone. Likewise, God who is the owner and creator of universe knows what rules or what standards we have to follow when we live in this world. The inevitable failure to meet God’s standards result in sin. No matter how much ever we advance in Science or Medical field, if we are not solving the problem of sin then the root cause remains unsolved. Bible teaches us that the cause for sufferings, pain and sorrows can be traced back to the root cause – Sin.

Jesus Christ is the solution to the sin problem. For that reason, he came to this earth leaving beside his Godly glory. God says, the punishment of sin is death and eternal punishment in hell. But God loves the sinners. He did not want sinners to perish but at the same time God cannot just forget the sin of mankind. As he is a loving God he is also a righteous God. He cannot just overlook the sin and love a person. He must punish the sinners. So Jesus Christ himself came down to this earth as a representative of mankind and carried the sin of the mankind and died for the mankind – for you and for me. On the cross of Christ we see the love and justice of God fulfilled. Now whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have an everlasting life. In other words, those who believe in Jesus Christ will spend their eternity in heaven after death. Those who believe in Him shall find meaning and purpose to their life. They live with a hope that death is not the end. It is just the door to eternal life. In the sorrows, they rejoice because sorrows are there only in the earth. They greet death gladly so that they can be in the presence of their loving saviour – Jesus Christ.

The True meaning of Christmas

Romans 10:9,10 … that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

This is the greatest Christmas gift. Christmas is not about Santa and wine. It’s about Jesus Christ. It’s about thanking Jesus Christ for his wonderful sacrifice which is the means for our salvation. If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your saviour, then this is the right time. As the word says, confess your sins, confess that Jesus Christ is God and he died for your sins on the cross of Calvary. If you sincerely believe in his death and resurrection then you will be saved. No matter how worst sinner you are, no matter from which religion you are, you will be saved. This knowledge doesn’t save you but your sincere belief and your faithfulness to your saviour Jesus Christ. Your life after your salvation proves whether your decision was sincere or not. If you have confessed and acknowledged Jesus as your saviour then your life is secured in the hands of God and most welcome to our Christian family. Heaven rejoices in the salvation of a sinner. Your life is valuable in the sight of God. May God bless you and have a meaningful Christmas.
